About Van Gogh
Van Gogh is a completely refurbished, full kitchen 1986 Volkswagen Westfalia camper. Features include new interior and cushions, 2000btu propane forced air furnace and high efficiency electric refrigerator. A large auxilary battery and two permanently mounted solar panels allow you to be off grid for your entire trip. Safety features include 3 point seat belts, new larger wheels and tires, improved suspension and bumpers and heavy duty disc brakes. In addition VanGogh has a fresh Subaru engine and new manual transmission. This van comes road-trip-ready with folding chairs, a small portable table and cooking supplies. While the van sleeps four, two or three adults, or two adults and children will be the most comfortable combination. This van is dog friendly but we require a $100 cleaning charge and dogs weighing less than 20 lbs must come with a portable carrier.
If you are looking for a van to “boon dock” or drive off road or on long dirt roads this is not the van for you. We realize that one or two miles of dirt road may be required to reach a campground but please understand that no roadside coverage will provide service unless the road is paved. We do not allow our vans to drive on dirt roads for more than a mile or two.
Note: This van has a 4-speed manual transmission. If you do not have recent experience with a manual transmission please consider renting our other van, Honu.

About Silver Star
Silver Star is a 2020 Pleasure Way Tofino van built on the Dodge ProMaster platform. With an Automatic Transmission and 3.6L Pentastar gasoline engine the expected mileage is 17mpg. This van features a pop top and standard Westfalia style interior. Creature comforts include a 16000 btu externally vented propane forced air furnace and high efficiency electric refrigerator. The stove is electric induction and there is ample counter space for meal preparation. This van is powered by two 100amp hour Lithium Ion batteries and has 200 amp hour solar panels mounted on the roof. Safety features include 3 point seat belts, air bags in the front and two lap belts in the rear. The absence of rear 3 point belts restricts this van to children who are over 4′ 9″ in height as per state occupancy safety requirements. This van comes road trip ready with folding chairs, a small portable table and cooking supplies. While the van sleeps four, two or three adults or two adults and children will be the most comfortable combination. The bunk above has a maximum capacity of 200 pounds. We do allow pets to travel in this van but only after prior approval. The van you pick up will be spotless with all dishes cleaned in a dishwasher.
We purchased Silver Star with our long distance travel customers in mind and it comes with a 120 mile per day average mileage allowance. Extra miles are charged at $.35 per mile. This van must be rented for a minimum of 6 nights and to a maximum of 3 adults for comfort. The van comes with a roof rack for mounting paddle boards but must be unloaded before opening the pop top. You may not add your own roof box or bike rack to this van.

Salish is a 2020 Pleasure Way Ontour 2.0. Built on the Ford Transit 2500 chassis, the Ontour 2.0 features the fuel efficient 3.5L EcoBoost® engine and measures 19′ 8″ long. The Ontour 2.0 benefits from 78″ of headroom and an enormous 77″ long rear bed. You can expect 17-18 mpg if you drive 60-65mph. Creature comforts include a toilet and shower, two speed 16000 btu externally vented propane forced air furnace and large high efficiency electric refrigerator. The electric induction stove and a small microwave makes meal prep fast and efficient. There is ample counter space for meal preparation. This van is powered by two 100amp hour Lithium Ion batteries and has 200 amp hour solar panels mounted on the roof. There is also an Onan 2.0 generator for off grid camping. Safety features include 3 point seat belts, air bags in the front and two 3 point belts in the rear. While the van has four seat belts there is only room to sleep two adults. The van you pick up will be spotless with all dishes cleaned in a dishwasher.

Renting Your Chuckanut Westfalias Van
Rates
- Our van rental rates for a classic Westfalia Van are $200 per night year round. The larger 2020 Pleasure Way Tofino rents for $250 per night. Salish is a full convenience coach with toilet and shower and rents for $300 per night. This does not include the required insurance coverage. As a legitimate tax paying business we also collect 8.9% Whatcom County Sales Tax and 5.9% Washington State Rental Car Tax. We know that some people who rent vans are not charging for or paying sales tax but we do not believe that this is a sustainable policy.
- Insurance is required on our rentals must be obtained through our insurance provider. Our current provider offers three levels of coverage that range in price from $29.95 per day to to $49.95 per day. All packages come with full comprehensive and collision coverage. The lower priced option provides the statutory state minimum (usually $25,000) for liability protection. The $49.95 package comes with $1M in liability protection. The middle tier ($39.95) is the same level of insurance coverage as the base tier, but also includes an added roadside assistance package. We do not mark up our insurance and provide it to our renters at our cost.
- The rental includes 120 miles per night and mileage over that amount is charged at a rate of $0.35 per mile. Your mileage allowance is 720 miles for a 6-night rental. That will allow you to see a great deal of the Northwest during your rental. The Westfalia vans are not long distance road vehicles and you and your van will need a rest after driving 200 miles or so. The Tofino is capable of longer distance destinations but still comes with a mileage allowance of 120 miles per night.
- If you rent a Westfalia you can add a roof box $150 per week, Yakima rear hitch 2 bike carrier, $100 per week, port-a-potty $50 per week ($100 if you return it full). We can provide freshly laundered sleeping bags, pillows and towels for every camper for $75. Just let us know if you want one of the options. Our two contemporary vans are not set up for bicycle racks or roof boxes.
- The van you pick up will be spotless with all dishes machine washed and all surfaces and fabric sterilized with our vapor cleaning machine and uv sterilizer.
Scheduling Your Rental
- There is a 4-night minimum on rentals of Westfalia Vans and Silver Star. Salish has a 5 night minimum. The maximum length of rental is 14 nights unless you discuss your itinerary with us in advance. If your itinerary requires more time just mail us: info@chuckanutwestfalias.com and we may be able to extend that time depending on your itinerary.

Picking Up Your Van
- Your van will be ready for you in Bellingham after 12:00pm on the starting day of your rental. The van is due back by 1PM on the last day of your rental. If this timeline will not work for you please let us know in advance and we will try to accommodate your schedule.
- If you are flying into Seattle you can reach Bellingham by plane, bus or train. If you make advance reservations, a rental car can be picked up in Seattle and dropped off at the Bellingham Airport for a reasonable amount. If you arrive at the Bellingham Airport or the Five Points Sheraton bus stop we will provide transport to and from the airport to our location on Chuckanut Drive.
- If you prefer to arrive the night before your rental or stay in Bellingham after your camping trip we would suggest that you book a room at the Heliotrope Inn in Bellingham or the new Holiday Inn Bellingham Airport. Both are modern and very clean. The Heliotrope Inn is within walking distance of several restaurants and microbreweries. We can provide you with transportation to and from the motel.
The Places You’ll Go
- Maureen and I have many years of outdoor experience. We have been backpacking, climbing, fly fishing and skiing in the northwest for many years. We can help you with an itinerary and even give you information on some of our favorite secret overnight campgrounds. After you reserve your van we will gladly help you build an itinerary that fits your interest.
- Our vans access the Washington, British Columbia, Idaho and even Montana area with prior arrangement. Please understand that the farther away that you travel the more difficult it is to get to you and provide you with assistance should you need it. Obviously, longer trips such as Yellowstone Park require a longer rental period and you should plan to rent our larger vans Silver Star or Salish. You really don’t want to plan to travel more than 250 or 300 miles a day. There are so many great camps along the way that you would not want to miss.
