VanGogh gets a new engine! A completely rebuilt 2000 Subaru EJ 25 with factory short block, refreshed transmission with strength upgrades and a higher 4th gear we run down the freeway turning 3000 rpm at 65. So quiet at idle you think it must have died. The RMW kit is so well thought out! Go Van Gogh!

Checking this 2000 Outback motor with 200,000 miles for cylinder taper and piston wear. Off to the hone to straighten the cylinders and to the Subaru dealer for pistons. We use Subaru OEM parts. Expensive but dependable. This is an old school machine shop...complete with an inappropriate calendar. Times have certainly changed!

Building an EJ25 Subaru for Van Gogh...Back at work this week for the first time in three months after my shoulder surgery. I’m taking my day off to start the rebuild. I have an engine that I took out of a Subaru a year and a half ago. Van Gogh has finally become so undependable that we’re going to do the transplant this month. Why does a guy my age still go to work? Because I get to do cool things like this. Transmission modification is next so we go down the freeway at 2800rpm....sorry, getting carried away here...

This was their second long rent with us this season and we always get great camping trips from this very experienced camping couple. They knew van life before it was “cool”!

Honu spent the day with Melvin Powell @vantasticwesty to get 200 watts of flexible solar panels. Installed to compensate for heat build up and to make Honu fully off grid as we prepare her for a winter in San Francisco. Melvin also added some theft proofing to help with security. Great person who really knows his craft!

Silver Star Needs an Awning....looking for a mounting rail and brackets...this van will be a while in development before Mexico...awning, lift, more modest running boards, larger tires....and if it is ever home again after a summer of doing laps to Glacier, Yellowstone we will start....be a while before we can go back to Mexico anyway.
